John Craig Venter (Salt Lake City, 14 oktober 1946) is een Amerikaanse moleculair bioloog en zakenman. Hij was de eerste mens van wie het complete DNA-profiel werd ontcijferd in een privaat gefinancierd genoomproject waaraan hij zelf deelnam. In 2010 synthetiseerde hij als eerste wetenschapper het genoom van een Mycoplasma mycoides-bacterie en plaatste dat in 'leeggehaalde' cel van een nauw verwante bacteriesoort. In Time's Magazine stond hij in 2007 en 2008 in de top 100 van meest invloedrijke personen.
